Tips To Remember

Because I can never remember anything....

Header R&R

For the driver header, undo all the bolts, let it hang, then remove starter. Just drops out. When going back in it's the opposite - lay the header in place, install the starter, then bolt up the header. Starter cables can be accessed with a 1/4" drive wobble when the headers are in place. For some @%#^@$# reason the wire mounts are metric. Large one is 13mm, small one is ?? 5??

The passenger just requires the oil filter adapter to be removed. R&R is easy with a deep 1/2" drive 9/16" socket.

All the bolts can be reached from the top with a ratcheting 3/8" wrench. The third one on the passenger side is really tight - need to remove it last and install it first because there's so little room between the bolt head and the tube. The rear ones are easy to get to from underneath, but a challenge from up top.

The dipstick slides in easily after the header is mounted, too.

Taylor 8mm plug wires

Strip using knife and side of MSD block. Crimp using ratcheting crimpers then tighten with the Accel manual crimpers. Check plug boots for a membrane that could cover the terminal.

Header wrap cut length and wrap order

#7 - 6.5', #3 - 12', #5 - 11', #1 - 29'; #2 - 18.5', #8 - 8.5', #4 - 17.5', #6 - 20'. Start #4 after the pinch and leave the gap on #4/#6 at the flange so the rear-middle bolt can be reached.

Spark Plugs

For #8, use the fancy spark plug socket and a 3/4" wrench to turn it. The rest can be reached with just a 3/8" drive ratchet, with a short extension for ease on a few.

Coolant

When re-filling, do NOT fill up all the way. It'll just spit out half a gallon while warming up then fall way down. Leave the radiator maybe half full. Just watch it but don't put in too much until you see it actually circulating. You'd think I could remember this after spilling coolant so many times.
